NYT Blunder on the South China Sea
Tensions are already high enough in the disputed South China Sea with its six main claimants — China, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, and Malaysia — vying for resources and sovereignty over arguably the world’s largest and most strategically significant sea. Yesterday’s New York Times editorial, however, mysteriously decided to throw North and South Korea into the mix:
China’s claims have become increasingly shrill in recent months; Beijing has even started calling the South China Sea, where Vietnam and the two Koreas also have claims, a “core national interest.” In the diplomatic world, those are fighting words.
That’s a serious boo boo for a newspaper of such repute, and I’ve yet to see a correction printed.
Now time to get back to reading for my….International Relations of the South China Sea class. Am sure this will get a mention on Monday!
